New Electronic Architecture will boost fightability and future-proof vehicles

A new open electronic architecture (EA) developed for FRES and Warrior at BAE Systems’ Leicester facility will give a step change from the current British Army ‘analogue’ armoured vehicle fleet.

Intuitive interfaces for the 'digital generation' will merge information from many sources and present it in a simple way. The screens for commander, gunner, driver (and dismounts on Warrior) can switch between displays and information sets at the touch of a button, sharing information among the crew and allowing most tasks to be carried out by any crew member, minimising crew workload and boosting flexibility and "fightability".

The genuinely open nature of the BAE Systems architecture will allow products from any vendor to be quickly integrated. With vehicle upgrades becoming increasingly software-driven, the right EA will "future-proof" the fleet making technology insertion simpler, cheaper and quicker. Choosing the right EA for these programmes is vital as it is likely to become the standard for the entire British Army armoured vehicles fleet in time.

A built-in health and useage monitoring system and electronic manual will ease trouble-shooting and maintenance, increasing vehicle availability. An operating log will allow post-mission review. On-board training for both maintenance and operations becomes a reality
