Radar image of T72 tank
The ATC has been active in imaging systems R&D for over 20 years, encompassing both spaceborne and airborne sensors. During this period, we have pioneered the development of image understanding and image analysis software.
Image interpretation provides a key component in understanding the battlefield. However, data are available from many sources in a wide range of formats and types. This threatens to swamp the human interpreter and thereby compromise the utility of the data. The ATC performs research and development for automatic and assisted image understanding capabilities. These encompass and link together: mission/operations concepts, sensor design, data evaluation, image processing, target detection and recognition, signature modelling and application demonstrations.
Specific areas of expertise include:
- Multi sensor data fusion
- Automatic Target Recognition
- Assisted target recognition
- Novel radar processing techniques
- Characterisation of land, vegetation, sea and ice from radar data
- Target classification
- Terrain height mapping
