The next generation of warship engineers are set to embark on their careers at BAE Systems. During the coming weeks around 70 apprentices and 40 graduates will join the Company's Surface Ships division on its apprenticeship and graduate schemes.
Based at the Company’s ship yards on the Clyde and at its facilities in Portsmouth and Filton, the new recruits can look forward to learning from some of the most skilled trades people and engineers that the warship industry has to offer. At the same time, they will have the opportunity get involved in the design and build of complex modern warships, such as the Queen Elizabeth Class aircraft carriers and the new Type 26 programme.
Alan Johnston, Managing Director of BAE Systems Surface Ships and former apprentice himself, said: “Apprentices and graduates are an integral part of our business, helping to ensure that we develop the engineering talent needed to support our continued drive for innovation and engineering excellence.
“Our new recruits can look forward to an exciting career involved in the design, manufacture and support of the most advanced warships in the world and we look forward to welcoming them into the company.”
BAE Systems has 1,000 apprentices and 500 graduates in training across the UK, as part of the Company’s Skills 2020 strategy to ensure it has the right skills to remain competitive and operate successfully in the UK over the next decade and beyond.
With a £50 million investment on skills and education activity in the UK, the Skills2020 initiative extends beyond apprenticeships and graduate programmes to include engagement with schools and university partnerships as well as collaboration with the MOD, trade unions and continued professional development schemes for employees.
The BAE Systems apprentice and graduate recruitment process for 2011 will open in the autumn. For further information, or to apply online, go to www.baesystemseducationprogramme.com.
